Varanasi rewards the curious traveller. Beyond Kashi Vishwanath, the city is layered with ghats, gardens, ruins and markets that have drawn seekers for thousands of years. Here's how we'd spend a few unhurried days.
1. Take a sunrise boat ride
Glide along the Ganges as the sun rises behind the ghats and the city performs its morning rituals — bathers, yogis and priests all bathed in golden light. It's the most beautiful hour in Varanasi.
2. Visit Sarnath
Just 12 km away, Sarnath is where the Buddha gave his first sermon. The Dhamek Stupa, monastery ruins and museum (home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka) make a peaceful half-day trip.
3. Lose yourself in the old city
The galis (lanes) behind the ghats are a maze of temples, tea stalls and Banarasi silk shops. Try a clay cup of masala chai, a plate of tamatar chaat, and pick up a hand-woven silk saree direct from the weavers.
4. See the evening Ganga Aarti
No visit is complete without the nightly fire ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat — read our dedicated guide for the best way to experience it.
Ask our team for a simple day-by-day plan tailored to how long you're staying — we love helping guests see the real Kashi.
